Best espresso machine under $500

We may earn a commission when you buy through links on this page. It doesn't change our picks. How we're paid

With $500, the real question is what happens to the grinder. Espresso needs a fine, fresh grind, and a machine without a grinder needs one that costs about $200. So you can buy a cheaper machine and a real grinder, an all-in-one with the grinder built in, or a machine designed to work with pre-ground coffee. Here is the best option for each route. Not set on a budget yet? Start with our beginner's guide.

What you give up under $500

  • Either the grinder or the machine is entry-level. At this budget you can't have a top grinder and a top machine. Reviewers consistently call built-in grinders the weakest part of all-in-one machines. (TechGearLab, Coffee Chronicler)
  • Smaller tanks and drip trays. Compact machines need refilling and emptying more often.

Best value: machine plus grinder

Breville Bambino + Baratza Encore ESP

$299.95 + $199.95 = $499.90 at Breville and Baratza list prices

  • Bambino: ready in about 3 seconds, PID, manual steam wand
  • About 6.3 in wide, as measured by reviewers
  • Encore ESP: 20 espresso steps plus 20 drip steps

Good fit if

you want real espresso and are happy to learn milk steaming by hand. When you outgrow the grinder, you can replace just that.

Skip it if

you want milk frothed for you, or one box on the counter instead of two.

Check the ES351 price at Ninja

  • Built-in conical grinder, 60 settings
  • Built-in scale and grind recommendations
  • Assisted tamper
  • Automatic frothing presets plus manual mode
  • Espresso and drip coffee (2-in-1)

Good fit if

you want grinder, scale and frother in one compact machine, plus drip coffee for the rest of the house.

Skip it if

you want cold brew or cold-pressed espresso (the bigger Luxe Café Premier does those) or large drinks.

What reviewers agree on

Worth knowing

  • Reviewers split on the espresso: one called it average (Tom's Guide), another was impressed and found it more than adequate for most people. (Coffee Kev)
  • The cheaper Luxe Café Mini (ES301, $449.99) has the same grinder and scale with a manual steam wand. The one independent review we found of it called the espresso inconsistent and the machine not especially beginner-friendly. (TechRadar)

Raised by one reviewer: the sides are plastic and grounds collect on top of the machine (Tom's Coffee Corner); it is one of the easiest machines for complete beginners because it dials in the grind for you (Tom's Guide); the grind-size suggestions once pointed to a setting that choked the machine (Coffee Kev).

Compare the full-size models: Ninja Luxe Café Premier ($599.99).

Lowest cost

De'Longhi Dedica Duo (EC890M)

$249.95 at De'Longhi US (EC890M, stainless) · no grinder

Check the Dedica Duo price at De'Longhi

  • About 6 in wide
  • Pressurized (dual-wall) baskets only
  • 51 mm portafilter
  • Cold brew mode
  • Manual steam wand

Good fit if

you want espresso drinks on the smallest budget and counter, and are fine using pre-ground coffee to start.

Skip it if

you want to learn real espresso with fresh-ground beans and full control, or want latte-art milk.

What reviewers agree on

Worth knowing

  • Reviewers split on the steam wand: two found it inconsistent (Tom's Guide, Livingetc); one found it made good milk texture. (TechRadar)
  • Pressurized baskets are why it works with pre-ground coffee. If you later buy a grinder, you may want non-pressurized baskets, and only 51 mm De'Longhi-compatible ones will fit. (Tom's Guide)

Raised by one reviewer: the drip tray doesn't slide out, and De'Longhi's cheaper Stilosa performs similarly (Tom's Guide); the status lights are confusing without the manual (TechRadar).
